There were two coaches, and I chose Jamie Eason Middleton. I was determined. The program lasts 90 days and every day you watch a video and do the assigned workout. There's a meal plan too. I was so into it. I never missed a workout. Until I fell down the stairs (ok, jumped thinking I was on the ground due to my poor depth perception) and broke my ankle.

Working out came to a screeching halt. I was put in a walking boot cast. I purchased a knee scooter and crutches. This was midway through OC3. I was disappointed - my first thought when learning my ankle was broken was "But tomorrow is leg day!)

I'd been big on always getting at least 10,000 steps a day with my Fitbit too. That wasn't going to happen either.

I gained some weight while my ankle healed. Obviously.

So last summer, OC4 came up. Jen Widerstrom (of Biggest Loser fame) was one of the coaches, and I chose her. She even had a book, which I purchased, called DIET RIGHT FOR YOUR PERSONALITY TYPE. Best money I ever spent. I started the challenge at 154 and ended it at 137. Numerous inches less on waist, hips, etc. I did every workout. I made the top 25 and got put in the Oxygen magazine. I was proud of myself.

But I wasn't finished. Then I went back and redid OC3. I lost 7 more pounds. Once done with that, I did a free challenge called Lean Body for Her. And then it was time for OC5. My coach was Amber Dodzweit Riposta. She had workouts like I've never done before, so it was interesting.

OC5 just ended. I've lost three more pounds, so I'm now at 127. That's a good weight. And I have some muscles. I missed a few workouts here and there for various reasons, but I did almost all of them. I stuck with the healthy eating and macros I learned from Jen Widerstrom.

And now I'm doing OC1, since I missed it the first time. You can purchase past challenges and do them on your own. I'm in the habit of working out now, I eat healthy 90 percent of the time, but I do have an occasional pizza or burger. Alcohol is my biggest hurdle. I do like my wine and beer. I'm still working on that.

How did I stick with it? I set a scheduled workout time, just like I do for my writing. Of course, if something else comes up and I miss it, I have to do it later. But I feel healthy and strong, which I love.

I'm 58 years old. If I can do it, so can you. Start small. When I started, I couldn't do squats with any weight. Same for step-ups. I've gradually been increasing the weight so now I'm up to 15 and 20's.

It's not hard to create a new habit. Try it. You may surprise yourself.Karen Whiddonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10669628257477406166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-416904707062455617.post-27493523150289938212019-08-06T07:24:00.003-05:002019-08-06T07:24:43.553-05:00Hot August Days Here we are, in what is likely my least favorite month of the year. August. Where in Texas the heat index is so high it makes my stomach hurt to stay outside very long and where the air quality causes alerts. As in, dangerous to breathe.

Ugh.

The grass starts to turn brown, no matter how often you water it. The electric bills soar, but I'm still grateful for air conditioning. There are no good shows on television, and we've watched all the good ones on Netflix and Prime. I read a lot, walk early in the morning (Hello, 7:30), and dream of fall. Or what passes for fall around here. Cooler temps, shorter days, and the return of all my favorite shows. Yes!

Kids will be going back to school in a couple weeks. Teachers start this week. Back to school sales are running constantly, and there was just a couple of horrible mass killings at a Walmart in El Paso and a nightclub in Ohio.

So much darkness. Arguing and hatred spewing and I don't even recognize our country any more. I try to be light-filled, I try to love everyone and respect their viewpoints that might be different than my own. I understand each and every person has their own journey to make, their own lessons to learn. But that doesn't stop the pain.

It. Freaking. Hurts.

As does feeling powerless to do anything about it. I tried the whole calling my representative, sending emails. It was like a voice crying in the darkness. Nothing changed. I'm not sure why. And on social media, I watch name-calling, finger-pointing, hatred and enmity and see the darkness swirling stronger. I back away - back away from Facebook and Twitter - and retreat to Instagram where there are only lovely photos.

I cuddle my new puppy, and love on my other dogs, and pray. Karen Whiddonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10669628257477406166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-416904707062455617.post-4024465745035690302019-07-28T07:44:00.000-05:002019-07-28T09:38:14.390-05:00Sunday Morning MusingI woke up at 6 this morning, have taken my dogs out and fed them, given them their meds, and hubby and big dogs are back in bed. I'm sipping coffee with my new puppy at my feet.

What? Puppy?

I know, I know. I have enough dogs. My Macadoo is old and failing. He's 13 which is super old for a Boxer and my vet says he has a Pancreatic tumor. Once he leaves us (which will hurt a lot - he was our very first Boxer), I will have my Liberty Bell, who is 8, and my Peyton, who is also around 8. He's a rescue so we don't know how old he is exactly. I also have foster Keeper Truman, who is 4 and has a serious brain illness. So right now, there are 4 Boxer dogs living in my home. Dudley has been gone 8 months and I still miss him like a giant hole in my heart. I never wanted a white dog, didn't even particularly care for white dogs, but I loved that boy. And because of him, I now find white dogs beautiful.

Cue dramatic music.

As you know, I volunteer for a large Boxer dog rescue. I'm on the Foster Committee and the Welcome Committee. Friday as I was unloading groceries, a text came through with photos of the most adorable, 4 month old Boxer puppy. He was being surrendered by his owner. I fell instantly in love.

I showed my husband. He, being the more practical one, had a lot of questions. I answered them the best I could. The main thing is Truman is immuno-compromised, so any dog coming in this house must be up to date on shots and can't come from a shelter. Hubby finally shrugged and said, "Do what you want to do."

And thus, the miracle white puppy came to live with us.

I am in love. I let my fellow rescuers know we would probably be adopting him. (Who am I kidding?) He gets checked out by our vet next week. I even forced myself to look through applications to see if there were any approved applicants who might be the better home for him. When I foster, I consider many options for a permanent home, but my main question is if the adopter's home would be better for the dog than my own.

But then look at this face. Look at it! He's loving and sweet, not a barker though just like my Dudley, when he wants something, he will bark to let you know. He's only been here 2 days, but I'm already head over heels.

Since I work from home and hubby is retired, he won't be alone hardly at all. He is crate trained and house trained. I think the previous owner might not have realized that puppies can't hold it all night. I got up at 1 am and took him out last night and I'll be doing that for awhile. (The loose rule of thumb is how many months they are is how long a puppy can hold it. He's 4 months, so 4 hours max.)

I'll know more after our rescue vet sees him, but I'm sure he'll be a great addition to our family. I didn't realize how badly I was needing this. A new baby. He makes me so happy.

Look for updates. I'm sure they'll be coming. soon.Karen Whiddonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10669628257477406166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-416904707062455617.post-64116152050648955272019-07-24T07:09:00.000-05:002019-07-24T07:09:05.204-05:00Hello Again - Morning MusingsIt's been a long time since I posted here. I've been blogging once a month over at Romance Gems. For awhile, I was keeping a private personal journal, but even that has stopped. But right now, it's my favorite time of day - early morning. I've let the dogs out and fed them and they and my husband have gone back to sleep. I've had my yogurt and am sipping on my first cup of coffee. We're having a cooler than usual summer morning here in Texas and I'll be going outside to walk soon.

It's been a weird time for me lately. Both my parents are gone now - 6 years for my mother and 4 for my father. Both were very ill with different things and Lonnie and I took care of my dad until the end. Now that part of my life has passed and my husband's health is failing. No one knows what it is. He's had tests and tests. He has anemia and no strength. He can only walk short distances. When he comes up the stairs, he has to rest. The other morning he almost passed out. It's scary and sad and I pray the doctors figure out something. We're cancelling a cruise we had booked for November because he won't be able to enjoy himself (he doesn't want a wheelchair.)

My first Boxer, my Mac Macadoo, turned 13. Since Boxer's life spans are considered to be 8-10 years, that's OLD. My vet told me he has a pancreatic tumor, which is the same thing my mom had. For Mac, all we can do is love him and watch him and when it's time, set him free. We've had him since he was 9 weeks old and it's hard to even imagine life without him. The seasons change.

I've been working out and eating healthy. I lost 26 pounds total and have kept my weight steady. I'm stronger now than I've been in awhile. So there's that.

My daughter sold the house she'd built 12 years ago and built a new one. She stayed with us for 6 months until it was complete. She's been in her new home nearly 2 months now. It's beautiful and has an amazing backyard and I'm thrilled for her.

On Facebook, I've suddenly been deluged with friend requests. Over 1500 in 2 or 3 weeks. I've deleted some, blocked some crazy people trying to sell me something, and added a whole bunch of people I don't know. As an author, I'm used to that, just not in the volume it's been recently. I'm not sure, but I suspect this is due to that blog Romance Gems, which seems to be very popular. What's weird if people I don't even know are sending me Private Messages almost constantly. I've blocked some, unfollowed a bunch, and keep hoping it all settles down soon. If not, I may have to reconfigure my personal Facebook account and direct all new people to the author page.

I'm writing away - constantly busy - still under contract. Working on a Colton's right now, with two more Harlequin Romantic Suspense on the horizon from the previous contract. I love being busy. I've been slowly putting up my backlist. No new material yet, but hopefully someday.

The RWA National Conference is going on right now in one of my favorite places in the world - NYC. I'm living vicariously through my other writer pals on Facebook and IG.

I'm still very active in the Boxer Rescue. I love helping save dogs, though some of the things I see people do can destroy my faith in humanity. No new fosters - we still have Keeper Truman - but I'm tempted on a weekly basis.

That's it for now. Morning musings, I guess. Karen Whiddonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10669628257477406166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-416904707062455617.post-74923285613270763692015-02-19T09:57:00.000-06:002015-02-19T09:57:01.002-06:00A New YearI haven't posted in awhile. It's more than halfway through the second month of 2015 and I haven't felt even the slightest desire to show up here and post anything. I'm busy - with writing, with family, with rescue work. I'm content. Not a day goes by that I'm not thankful for the life I have. My husband is my best friend, I work from home, and I'm debt-free. No complaints there.

I wish I could motivate myself to exercise more. Join that new gym, and actually go. But I walk and occasionally work out with weights here at home, and I've lost 5 pounds by cutting my portion size down. I always ate pretty healthy, I just ate more than I should. I'd like to keep losing weight, and plan to, but basically I'm happy with myself and my life.

I just realized this is going to be one of those rambling posts. Since hardly anyone reads this, it's ok.

I'm growing my hair out again. It's blond, which is a color choice I haven't made in a long time. That's ok too. I'll be 54 this year and one of the things I like about this age is the satisfaction I get from knowing myself and what I like and what I want.

Adding rescue work to my life has been wonderful. Sure it's hard - rescue isn't easy. Sometimes you see things you wish you could unsee. Sometimes you learn more about human nature than you wanted to know. Often it hurts. But the dogs don't know any of that. All they know is they've found kindness for the first time ever in their short life. Sometimes they're not sure if they can trust it. The foster dog I have now, Bridget, has been her 1.5 months and still isn't sure I'm not going to shove her out into the backyard and leave her there. She must have been ignored as she's starved for attention. But then when she gets it, she's uncomfortable with it. Like she is waiting for the hammer to fall, or the hand to strike.

But her forever dad is waiting for her - she has Heartworm treatment to go through - and he clearly loves her. He seems patient and if anyone can show this little dog how to love and be loved, he can. This kind of thing makes it all worth it. Reading my other rescue friends' stories and finding a tear in my eye, fills my heart. This is work that matters. I actually have made a difference.

And then there are my own personal dogs. One nearing the end of his life, almost 14, deaf and nearly blind. He's had a good life and been a great dog and I'll miss him when he goes. Until then, I'll keep him warm and fed and loved. The rest - two raised from puppy; they've never known a minute of hardship or cruelty, and that's how it should be. Two more who were rescued and are what's known as "foster failures." One who never left, one who was adopted and came back, and who will never leave again. They fill my heart. Frequently aggravate me, but always love me.

My job - my stories, my writing. I love my agent and my editor and my publisher. Though I'd love to win the lottery, I'm grateful I make enough to write full time. I'm pretty content these days.

So there you have it. 2015 has begun and I hope the course will be steady and calm and peaceful.

Yikes! Let me recap, as succinctly as I can.

We went on a week long cruise November 9-16. It was with other dog rescuers from Legacy Boxer Rescue. We went from Galveston to Cozumel, to Grand Cayman, and Jamaica. It was a lot of fun and I have tons of pictures posted on my FB page.

Still, here are a couple of them:

Came back from tropical weather to the first hard freeze of the season. Light snow, low 20's. Picked up two dogs from my daughters, came home, unpacked, started laundry, picked up three dogs (one foster) from the boarding place. They stunk to high heavens so, despite the freezing temps, I put them in the tub one at a time and bathed them. Lonnie dried.

And then my washer, which we'd been nursing along, died.

Exhausted, that Monday we had to go find a new washer, and I had so much catching up to do. That entire week it seemed like all I did was run crazy and never catch up. We chose a washer and Lowe's delivered it. I washed and washed and washed.

And then the next week was Thanksgiving! I grocery shopped, and got back to writing. That Wednesday before T-day, I cooked all dang day. And Thursday ate. Thursday was also our 27th wedding anniversary, which we decided to celebrate the next day. Here are a few Thanksgiving pics.

Friday we started putting up Christmas decor. I also had a Home Visit for Legacy (where I spend an hour with an applicant who wants to adopt). Also, my foster dog hurt his leg and I had to rush him to the vet. He was ordered to be confined to crate rest for the entire weekend and to take medication. Finally, Friday night we went out to dinner to celebrate 27 years (we chose PF Changs!)

Saturday, more decorating, another home visit. Sunday, finished the decorating and did laundry. I sent Lonnie to pick up a few things at the grocery store.

Here's my beautiful tree!

Monday, back to work. Here it is Wednesday, and I still don't feel like I've caught up or settled back into my routine. Hopefully soon.

Because I have to get together stuff to make a basket for the local animal shelter. And wrap Christmas gifts (I've done all on-line shopping so far.) And write. And write. And write.

Before I know it, Christmas will be here.

So now we're all caught up. I apologize (again) for my absence, but will eventually get back on the ball. Right? Right?Karen Whiddonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10669628257477406166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-416904707062455617.post-91420328108230560232014-10-29T17:06:00.001-05:002014-10-29T17:06:29.090-05:00Mea CulpaSorry, I have been absent for awhile - AGAIN. Life has been busy, I've been feeling my way around a new story as well as everything else.

A Secret Colton Baby is doing well. It has hit Bookscan's List of top 100 Romances for 3 weeks in a row. It was #31 for its debut, climbed up to #23, and this week is at #66. Pretty strong showing! That makes me happy.

I'm working on another Colton Book - this time the Colton's of Oklahoma. I'm book 3. It's called the Surgeon's Salvation. It's giving me FITS. I'm over a third done, but having to go back and rearrange stuff. FITS, I tell you. Today was one of those days where I feel like I can't write my way out of a paper bag. From experience, I know it will get better.

Right now I'm going to shut it down and go have a glass of wine. Tomorrow is another day.
I started thinking about it, and my 30th Harlequin book will be out in January 2015. My 40th overall (I published 5 with Kensington and 5 with Dorchester previously.) That's a pretty cool milestone. I'm actually stunned and pretty proud of myself.

And busy. Really busy. I finished a book, finished revisions on a book, and started a third. I have a new foster dog, and the temperature is winding down (Thank goodness!!) Autumn is my absolute favorite time of the year.

I've been thinking a lot about what makes me happy. Once upon a time, I would have included "things" in my list. These days, I've realized things are not as important as I once thought.

A year ago, on a Monday like today, I saw my mother alive for the last time. It's hard to believe a year has passed. It's really hard to believe I had to go through her "things", her "stuff" and realize all the possessions she thought were so important, so valuable, actually weren't. I think of my mom at odd moments, and will visit the cemetery on the 27th, the anniversary of her passing. But I remember the black crane that attended her service and flew off at the end of it. Knowing that some cultures consider cranes symbolic of a soul rising to the next level of existence, gives me great peace.
Volunteering and rescuing dogs makes me happy. Drinking coffee on the back porch in the morning with my husband also gives me joy. Being with my dogs, starting a new book, listening to a new album by one of my favorite artists, all make me content. Even exercising makes me feel good. I'm looking forward to cooler weather, to fires in the fireplace, soups and stews and homemade bread. Snow. I love snow.

At 53, I think this is the best part of my life in many aspects. Sure, I don't have as much money as I once did. I don't get a new car every couple of years, or expensive boots and shoes. But none of those things matter. My family, my friends, dog rescue, music, and my writing matter.

As I struggle to come to terms with mortality - brought into sharp focus with my mother's passing, taking care of my elderly father, keeping an eye on my husband's health - I realize more and more how everyone is responsible for finding their own happiness within. And right now, I am at peace with that.
It took awhile and last night the glass guy finally installed the glass. Starting tomorrow, we can use that shower! Yay!!

So here are the pics. Here in the beginning, you can see the dry rot / water damage went all the way through the insulation. They had to remove it and replace that too.

The entire shower was gutted and rebuilt.
And done! Finally! The actual work on the shower took one week. Then it took about two weeks to get the glass in (not sure why it took so long, but it did.) But we're very pleased!

We had the shower made larger too. Today they are *finally* putting up tile. It's going to be beautiful!

Since I don't want to post pics until the shower is done, I'm going to talk about last Friday and the wonderful Sushi dinner we had with my friend Denice and her husband Ron.

At first, Lonnie didn't want to go. He's never had Sushi and didn't want to try. But he finally agreed. I've only had it a couple of times and wasn't that impressed.

But this place was Oh So Good! Maybe it was the company and the experienced way they ordered the rolls. Either way, it was all fresh, tasted wonderful, and the texture was good. I'd definitely go back.

Here are a few pics.
We were stuffed! I read a quote somewhere - and didn't get who said it - but the quote was something like "Work gets done when your fear of not doing it exceeds your fear of sucking at it." I feel like that sometimes, especially when working on revisions. I'm always afraid I'm not going to do them right.

This weekend was busy for me - I volunteer for Legacy Boxer Rescue. On Saturday, I went to one of our Approved Adopters and met a foster mama there with her puppy. And my adopter is giving little Blizzard her forever home! (Blizzard's name will probably change!)

My second visit on Saturday was a Home Visit to qualify or disqualify someone who wants to adopt a Boxer from Legacy. Since the people didn't have a dog, another foster home met me there with their foster dog, Monroe.

Monroe is an older gentleman, and what a love bug. The young couple we visited loved him.

And then after the last home visit, I came home and Lonnie and I went to both Home Depot and Lowe's to look at fixtures for our shower. And then I got groceries. We planned to swim but a sudden rainstorm came up and nixed that idea.

Sunday, I met my fellow rescuer Denice at 9am to do a Home Visit. We brought a lovely dog named Dolce with us and the young family LOVED her too. (Fingers crossed)

And the last Home Visit of the day was for someone who wants to be a volunteer with Legacy. We met him and his fiancee and their three dogs.

Whew. Then I did laundry and collapsed. We had more rain.

This morning the shower reno has started. I am back to work. The weekend went buy in a flash.Karen Whiddonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10669628257477406166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-416904707062455617.post-29555752860996188182014-08-15T10:55:00.000-05:002014-08-15T10:55:11.404-05:00Mitchell ThomasAs most of you realize by now, I'm a dog person. I volunteer with Legacy Boxer Rescue and do what I can to help my favorite breed.

But before there were Boxers, I had Miniature Schnauzers. Years ago, my first Schnauzer was named Skipper Doodle Dandy (poor guy). He died from Hemolytic Anemia 13 years ago at the age of 8. My second Schnauzer Daisy Mae, died 3 years ago from Cushings Disease at the age of 11.

My last remaining Schnauzer Mitchell Thomas aka Bitsy Buddy will turn 13 tomorrow. He's been a healthy little guy until recently. As he's aged, he's lost his hearing, and his eyesight is a bit weak, and he wobbles when he walks. Oh, and he has a bit of dog dementia. But we still adore him and carry him up and down the stairs so he won't miss anything.

He used to love to swim, but his hind legs no longer work right so the only time he can go in the pool anymore is if we carry him. Which we do, holding him in the water which makes him happy.
In the thirteen years he's been with us, he's been a vital and important part of our lives. He's slowed down a lot now and mostly spends his days sleeping, and we have to hand feed him a lot as he doesn't want to eat, but he still likes to do dog stuff and his quality of life is still good.

Happy Birthday, Bitsy Buddy!Karen Whiddonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10669628257477406166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-416904707062455617.post-19846490304746670352014-08-12T10:55:00.003-05:002014-08-12T10:55:40.207-05:00Almost ThereIt has been a hectic 6 days since I last posted. My wonderful editor emailed me and asked me to send her whatever chapters I have completed on Shade of the Wolf. Since my method is to finish the book and then go back and edit the chapters and I wasn't done, I panicked. The first day I sent her the first four chapters, edited by me. Each day I'd send her 3-4 chapters as I went through and edited them. I had two left on Friday, one of which (Chapter 19) wasn't finished. Yes, I still had to write The End.

This past weekend, I finished editing Chapter 18 and sent it to her on Monday. Monday morning, I had to help my daughter move into her new classroom in her new school in her new district. After all the boxes were in the room, I started unpacking. Then I saw an email from my editor asking for the end of the book!

Yikes! I rushed home, sat down, and started writing. Luckily, I knew the ending. I just had to put the words on paper (and chose the right words!) In one afternoon, I wrote nearly 3000 words, emailing it to my editor right around 4pm my time (5 hers).

She edited it right then and there, put it in the system, and emailed me the line edits today. I have 2 days to do them, but they're light. Thank goodness.

So that's what I'm working on now. On a side note, I really like this book! It's different and my editor said the twist surprised even her - and she said she didn't surprise easily these day! She also said it was a powerful and emotional story! Yay!

Anyway, I must get back to it. After the AA's are done, I have to get really busy on the next revisions.
No rest for the wicked, apparently!
School starts again in a three weeks and so far our summer has been mild, which makes me a happy girl.

I'm wrapping up Shade of the Wolf and sending 4 chapters at a time to my editor, because it needs to go into production. I like the books. It's been a fun story to write.

So I'm busy, but happy.

This year has been the year of expensive home repairs for us. It started in January when we decided it was time to totally redo our pool. The pool is 19 years old. We had it gutted, new tile, coping and plaster put in. That was supposed to be our only home improvement project this year. We like to do one a year. We can afford one a year.

And then spring came and our lawn died. We had dirt. With rain and dogs, that equals mud. Lonnie had the old lawn scraped off, new dirt brought in, and the yard entirely re-sodded. Ka-ching. $$$

Ok, that's cool. In May, once my long term foster dog Katniss got adopted, we decided to finally head out to our lake place and our camper. It had been over a year since we'd been there. If you're a regular reader of this blog, you know what happened next. Yes, the camper had a leak and we had mold and mushrooms inside. Said camper is now at at repair place for extensive - and expensive work.

And yes, I'd put a deposit down on a cruise in November with my Boxer rescue friends.

Then I needed two fillings and - gasp - a root canal. I don't have dental insurance. I was quite shocked to learn how much a root canal - and a crown - cost, never mind two fillings. That little escapade left me $2500 poorer.

Then - yes, it continues - our master bath shower got invaded with ants. Lonnie sprayed, and since we had some mold issues, decided to regrout the entire shower. Tiles fell off, there's dry rot and mold (and ants) and we need a complete shower overhaul. I am STUNNED at how much this is going to cost. Estimates are still coming in.

The pool chlorinator went. We have a salt water pool. We ordered a new one (nearly $900) and NOW... NOW.... the damn POOL PUMP is spewing water. Lonnie is working on it to see if he can fix it.

I cancelled the cruise. Then decided not to. We deserve a cruise after all this.

There are still 4.5 months left this year. Pray for me that nothing else happens. Unfortunately, we learned we need to get our master bath shower completely redone. Dry rot, mold, blah blah. That will take the place of several things, first and foremost the cruise I'd put a deposit down on in November. Sigh.

Anyway, Thursday night we finished up early and were back in the hotel room and in bed by 10 or 10:30. I had a breakfast meeting set up with Anne Leslie Tuttle, Senior Editor of Harlequin Nocturne. There were several other authors there and I wish I'd taken pictures. I don't think I was awake enough. And I'm horrible with names. Some of the authors I knew, like Elle James. But I met tons of new people. Next to me was a woman who worked as a Hospice Nurse (aka Angel on Earth). She had fascinating stories. And I also met (going to Twitter to look up her name) Laura Kaye. She had suffered a traumatic brain injury and when she recovered, she discovered she wanted to write (she'd never had the slightest interest before). She became a bestselling author! AND AND - it that's not enough - she decided she wanted to lose weight to help her migraines. So she started eating clean and doing a workout video once a day. Since April 1st, she's lost 31 pounds! What an inspiration. And she was so nice. If she didn't live in Maryland, I'd hang out with her all the time!

And then I had a few hours to kill before a lunch meeting with Patience Smith, my editor and the Senior Editor for Harlequin Romantic Suspense. I spent that time drinking coffee to given myself energy for the rest of what would be a very long day.
The lunch was at Boudro's (that's ok, have I mentioned I LOVE that place?). Due to my overindulgence the night before, I opted for a healthy salmon and salad.

So, after that lunch I went back to the hotel. Despite the coffee, I really needed a nap. Really should have taken one. But I didn't. I changed and Lonnie and I walked around in the heat some more and had a beer.

We decided to go to the Rivercenter Mall (airconditioning!) and stopped at Hooters (I know, I know). The pigeons were bold and obnoxious there.

And then it was on to the party. Walking, in heels.

But all was good. The party was in full swing when we arrived. There were desserts, a chocolate fountain, and of course the open bar. People were dancing. I had to have a couple of drinks to dance, but I did.

It was fun and amazing. Harlequin had jars of new footy socks for us to wear to dance so we didn't have to dance in heels or bare feet, even though some people went with the bare feet (not me, socks all the way!) Sorry for the dim photos, but the light was muted.

I had SO much fun (and too much to drink). This year, I didn't go to the hotel bar like I used to do in years past. I went back to the hotel and got in around 1 am. My Jawbone Up showed I'd walked over 22,000 steps that day! (more actually, but after midnight the next 3300 rolled over to the next day).

Whew. I slept in until nine a.m and reluctantly got up as I had one last meeting - an early lunch with my agent of 12 years, Lucienne Diver. She chose Luciano's (the really good restaurants keep popping up!)

After that, we checked out early and headed home. The hotel was lovely and was able to rent our room, so they credited me back for the night. I was thrilled. And exhausted. Did I mention exhausted?

It took me two full days to recover from all that.

And then I learned about the shower. 2014 is the year of the home renovations, sadly. We redid our pool early on, then our yard, and then our camper (remember those nasty mushrooms? It's still in the shop). And now our shower. Sigh.

I didn't actually register for the conference (I rarely go to workshops anymore.) I went to meet with my editor and agent and see my friends. Oh, and go to the Harlequin party. I haven't been to RWA in 5 years (frowny face) and I seriously used to go every single year. Ah well.

Lonnie and I drove down Thursday morning. We didn't stay at the conference hotel - we chose to say at the historic Riverwalk Vista, a boutique hotel built in 1883 and beautifully restored. They have a continental breakfast from 8-10 every morning, a snack (lemonaide and cookies or scones) at 3, and then wine at 5.

Here's the hotel listed in Historic Hotels of America

And here's the exterior of the hotel.

It was a short walk from the conference and across the street from the riverwalk. I had a view of a beautiful orange sculpture outside my window.

We got down there Thursday and our room wasn't ready yet (check in time is 3 and it was 1:30) so we headed to the river to have a bite to eat and a beer. We stopped at an old favorite of mine - Mad Dog - an tried the Scotch Eggs. Wonderful. Amazing. I will definitely try them again.

Since I didn't have any meetings until Friday, after lunch when our room got ready, we unpacked and then decided to explore the Riverwalk. Since we've been there so many times, we know what we like. We had reservations at Boudro's for Saturday night, but decided to cancel them and just go Thursday.

I'm glad we did. There was no wait. And it was absolutely wonderful.

My traditional Prickly Pear Margarita.
This is part one of my San Antonio post. I'll do part two tomorrow.

Because I tend to forget stuff. This time, I've been so dang busy, I haven't had time to make lists.

For one thing, I'm nearing the end of the first draft of Shade of the Wolf. It's due 8-15 and will be out January 2015, I believe. I'm really liking where the book ended up going, though I'm having to make notes of various threads I need to tie up. Once I get that finished, I can go back and edit. And then turn it in!

Hair done, check. Even though I was loving my red shade and sort of wish I'd just stuck with that. I got blonde highlights put in and now my hair is really, really dry. Blech.

Toenails done. Dresses chosen. Groceries bought (requested by my sitter.)

Still must pack. Housecleaners are here cleaning, so my home will be nice and need for my house-sitter/dog-sitter.

I leave tomorrow. The conference has already started and tonight is the big literacy signing, which I won't be attending. But my Friday is packed full with meetings - editor breakfast, editor lunch, friend dinner, publisher party. Saturday I have brunch with my agent, and then we have dinner reservations at our fav place (Boudro's). It's going to fun. I so can't wait.

WEEK.) is the National Romance Writer's of America conference. The last time I attended one was in 2009 in Washington, D.C.

This one is in San Antonio, TX. One of my favorite cities. A place where Lonnie and I always have fun.

So I'm going. Not for the entire thing - it starts with a massive Literacy Signing on Wednesday, which I'll have to miss. We're going down on Thursday. It's difficult when you have three dogs. I found a house sitter and dog sitter who is coming to stay with my babies.

I have scheduled meetings - breakfast with the senior editor of one line that I write for, lunch with my editor, brunch with my agent, and dinner with a dear, good friend who I haven't seen for five years. Plus there's THE party of the year - Harlequin's annual bash. This involves desserts and drinking and dancing and lots of fun.

We also made reservations at our favorite restaurant - Boudro's. The food is to die for.

And you can get a REALLY good margarita on the Riverwalk.

The last time we went was in 2012, so it's time. I love San Antonio. Work combined with pleasure. Can't beat the combo.
Tomorrow is my first Boxer dog Mac Macadoo's eight birthday. I call him my gateway Boxer.

A little backstory. After my precious Cody (Border Collie) died at the old age of nearly 15, Lonnie and I swore off big dogs. We had our two Mini-Schnauzers Daisy and Mitchell, and two little dogs was just perfect for us. Or so we thought.

Except it seemed everywhere I went, I'd meet a Boxer. We went camping and a beautiful, friendly Boxer from the campsite behind us brought me his frisbee and then showered me with Boxer kisses. I was enchanted. I took one of my dogs to the vet, and there in the waiting room was another Boxer. I was seeing them everywhere. I wanted one, but still was not convinced.

So I did what I always do. Research. I purchased several books about Boxers and everything I read about them made me think they were my kind of dog. Goofy, loving, kindhearted. But big. Did I mention we said no more big dogs?

One day I was reading about Boxers on the internet (I tend to obsess when I'm interested in something) and came across these pictures at at Boxer breeder in Oklahoma with puppies for sale. This male pup was just about 8 weeks old and ready to go to his new home. I just melted.

I knew Lonnie though, and I knew he'd say no. After all, we had two dogs, little dogs. We didn't need a big dog, did we? My heart said we did.

So, as wives sometimes do to get their way, I lied. I told him I'd paid a $200 non-refundable deposit. He was furious, but he didn't want to lose that money, so he snarled "Fine." I then quietly paid the deposit via paypal and we made arrangements with the breeder to go pick up our new puppy. (Yes, I told Lonnie the truth eventually.)

Funny thing. We drove up to Oklahoma - the breeder lived in Pryor which is about 10 hours away, but met us in McAlister, which is only 5. As we pulled up to the agreed meeting spot, I got the rest of the money out of my purse and Lonnie got out to go talk to the guy. The first thing I hear from Lonnie is "Oooooooh." I think he fell in love with Macadoo on the spot.

Here he is on the way home.
We got him home and he wasn't any bigger than my Mini Schnauzers. At first.

Even after reading all those books, nothing prepared me for the utter craziness of a Boxer puppy. He was a handful, to put it mildly. Luckily, I worked with him and trained him to heel and sit and down and wait. The most difficult thing for him to learn was his recall. I spent weeks working with him on that. But finally, he would come when I called him. He was so unruly that Lonnie swore we'd never have another Boxer (hah!)

Here he is at age one. Such a beautiful boy.
He learned to swim - and loves it. He was my high-diving Boxer. (He doesn't do that anymore since he's older.)
I confess, even though I am now a dog rescuer, I purchased her from a breeder in Oklahoma. The breeder was the daughter of the breeder from whom I purchased Mac Macadoo.

I purchased her from a picture on the breeder's web page. The breeder named her Cricket. It's easy to see why.

I paid a deposit, as she was too young to leave her litter. The breeder sent me updated pictures periodically. Here's one they sent of her at about six or seven weeks old.

It was a 10 hour drive to where the breeder lived in Pryor, Oklahoma. My daughter came over to stay with our other dogs and we left early on 9-11-11 to pick her up. On the way there, we passed numerous ceremonies going on since it was the 10th anniversary of 9-11. This is why we named her Liberty Belle. When we finally arrived at the ranch, she was all wiggles and kisses. The cutest, tiniest, sweet baby girl.

We got her home and she was a holy terror, as all puppies are (especially Boxer puppies!) But she was so cute, you could only love her.

Libby was a sickly puppy - allergic to every protein we tried. We finally settled on Salmon and Sweet Potato Limited Ingredient food, eventually switching to Venison and Sweet Potato. She has since had to have both anal glands removed as she developed tumors, though her food allergies went away.

She learned to swim - which she loves now.

And she turned one year old.

She is the friendliest of all my dogs, my dog ambassador. Even my former foster dog Katniss - who does not like other dogs - liked her.

I survived the root canal (yes!) and yet still hurt. It's getting less each day, but I'm not exercising or anything until it's all better. I have to take Amoxicillian every 6 hours (four times a day) and I'm taking Aleve every 12 hours for the pain.

I go back on the 22nd to get fitted for the crown.

Despite that, we had a nice weekend. We swam and cooked out - turkey burgers on Saturday and Teriyaki chicken legs on Sunday. My daughter came over on Sunday. All the dogs are exhausted from two days of swimming, which is great. A tired dog is a good dog.

Also I got my photos back from the photographer I hired to take pics of me and of the dogs. I even got Lonnie to be in a couple of them. I put them on Facebook, so forgive the repetition.

Here are some of my favorites. Here's me with Peyton
At 4 am I came awake with throbbing pain in the same filling. I called the dentist, they said to come in, and the next thing I knew I was getting a root canal. It did not go well.

The first three shots didn't deaden it. Neither did the second three. Finally they gave me three more. Surgical grade, the dentist said. Still didn't work.

Finally, he told me he'd have to drill into the nerve. It would be painful, he said. The idea was to drill into the nerve and shoot some deadening stuff in there. He said it would be painful.. It was.

So after all this was over, I was supposed to get antibiotics and pain meds. Someone forget to call in the pain meds. As i was seriously hurting, I called the dentist emergency number. End result, I have antibiotics and pain meds. Feel slightly drunk and hoping I get some sleep tonight.Karen Whiddonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10669628257477406166noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-416904707062455617.post-64968420515556703652014-07-10T10:49:00.000-05:002014-07-10T10:49:03.787-05:00Throwback Thursday and Other Random MusingsOn Facebook, someone started this thing called Throwback Thursday. The idea is to post an old picture with the hashtag #TBT.

I enjoy seeing the pictures and it's so funny trying to find one to post. Back in the days of film cameras, we'd have to pay to have photos printed. Of course those things pile up and no matter how you intend to get them into albums, most times they never make it. When my mom passed, all of we kids got tons of photos to go through.

It's interesting what I find when I start searching for a photo. (No, I'm not going to post old photos here. It's hard enough to find them for Facebook!)

I've found pictures of me with blond hair, brown hair, red hair, curly hair, short hair, long hair. Pics of me skinny, skinny and young, young. Pictures where I didn't look so skinny, though I always was thinner than I am now. Sigh. One of the "benefits" of growing older.

I saw my mom in a lot of pictures. When she was fat and sassy, before cancer robbed her of so much. And my husband, also younger, looking dashing. Oh, and my daughter, who also had blond, blond hair and looked totally different than she does now.

Of course, there were the various beloved dogs, many of them passed to the Rainbow Bridge. Mandy and Cody, Skipper, and Daisy. I miss them all. And my Mitchell, who is now 13, much younger with a darker coat. Of course the Boxers too.

The past is fun to look at. Maybe one day I'll do a blog post with pics from various times in my life. Nah, probably not. Too much work to dig them out.
